My journey started on a rocky road. I found
myself unhappy, depressed, lethargic and felt
as though I was just going through the
Last July I met with Emily, a dietitian at
Evolution. I was armed with the right nutrition
information, a plan for exercise and a food
journal. A few missteps later I found myself in
December weighing the same as I did in
July; same old story. Emily and I worked
through many of my challenges; late night
snacking, overeating and lack of exercise. I
can’t say thanks enough to Emily for all her
support and encouragement through my
weight loss journey.

In February, I decided it was time to get
serious about exercise. I met Dawn, a
personal trainer and Pilates instructor at
Bristol Total Fitness. She started me off
slowly and encouraged me to try a Pilates
class. As I got stronger, Dawn changed up
the routine to accommodate classes and do 5 hours of cardio per week. Dawn
has helped me work through injuries and plateaus.

These two incredible women have made my journey an enjoyable experience.
Although my journey is just that (a journey), to date I have lost 55 lbs. and 50
inches. Words can not define what this has meant to me. I look forward to my
new healthy lifestyle with optimism, excitement and gratitude.

On December 26th 2008, at the age of
53 and 190 lbs, my life changed with a
phone call that I never expected.  My
doctor called me and informed me
that I was diabetic.  It was devastating.
I have a son and a husband and all I
could think of was who would take
care of them if something happened
to me?  I was overweight and knew it,
but I just accepted it.

I believe that the day I met with Kali
Garges, a Registered Dietitian at
Evolution, was the first day of the rest
of my life.  She met with me to explain
and educate me as to what I was
doing incorrectly.

Kali thank you from the bottom of my “healthy” heart for all your hard work,
dedication and patience.  Now I have the life I always wanted, but never thought I
could achieve.

In April, I broke my leg playing soccer. At the
time I was 14 years old and weighed 173 lbs.
I was very limited in activity because of my
cast and did nothing but play video games
sign of diabetes. He wanted me to see a
dietitian to learn about healthy eating habits.

I started seeing Kali Garges (a dietitian) at
Evolution in November and I weighed 218lbs.
She taught me a lot about healthy food
choices, portion sizes, and sugary drinks.
Kali gave me a journal to write down
everything I ate and to track my activity. I tried
to do everything Kali taught me. At my final
visit with Kali I had lost a total of 29lbs and
weighed 189lbs. Today I have lost a total of
45lbs. I feel so happy with myself and have a
lot more confidence.
I would like to thank Kali Garges for everything she has done for me. I still work
on good eating habits, and make sure I stay active. This has changed my life for
the better and I couldn't’t be more thankful for all the support and advice I have
received.

I've always had a problem with weight
gain.  I'm one of those people, who look at
food and puts on weight.  It became
worse after I retired.  My weight kept
increasing to the point where I weighted
275 pounds.  As a result, I had problems
with my knees, feet, legs and my hands
were swollen.  There were times when I
could hardly walk due to problems with
my right knee.  No matter how I dieted I
couldn't lose weight.  My doctor wanted
me to lose weight, so at that point; I
decided I needed to talk to a professional.

A friend recommended Evolution Nutrition
in Bristol, RI.  I called and made and
appointment to talk to Emily Gedney.  This
was the middle of June 2009.
Emily started me slowly eating balanced meals and exercise (walking).  If there
were foods I didn't like Emily recommended other foods that I would eat.  She
provided various healthy recipes to keep things from getting boring.
Appointments once a week with the weekly journal recording my meals and
walking daily were a big help.  Emily's guidance, positive attitude, patience and
expertise did the trick.

The middle of February 2010, my weight is 198 pounds.   I have more energy, all
the pain in my knee is gone, and the fluid in my hands, legs and feet is gone.

Thanks Emily.   You're great!

A number of our staff recently participated in the “Nutrition Boot Camp” offered by
Evolution Pilates & Nutrition.  This was an invaluable series of classes, taught at
our main office by Registered Dietitian Kali Garges, which provided a perspective
on nutrition that was dramatically different than many of us had learned in the
past.

A majority of the participants had agonized and struggled with the fad diets for
years.  The Nutrition Boot Camp classes gave us tools for real change.  We
highly recommend this series of classes.

Here are some quotes from our staff after taking the class:

“The class helped me realize how important our eating habits are and how much
they affect our bodies. I have lost 4 pants sizes!”

“I have learned quite a bit. I have lost 13 pounds just by eating properly, (not
dieting) stopped eating junk food, started to exercise again. This class inspired
me to take action instead of thinking what I should be doing and not doing it.”

“I am happy to say that, because of what I have learned from Nutrition Boot Camp,
I have had unbelievable results. I have been taken off some of my medications.”

“The nutrition classes were presented in a fun and educational manner and were
a delight to attend.  My whole family has reaped the benefits of the Nutrition Boot
Camp. “

on his 100lb weight loss success!

I was very much overweight for many years of
my life and then I decided to get my life back
in order. I stopped into Evolution and met
with Emily the registered dietitian.

She told me the foods I should be eating to
reach my goals and we discussed the
lifestyle changes that I needed to make.   In
Emily’s weekly meetings and weigh-ins we
discussed my eating habits along with
joining Bristol Total Fitness and exercising
regularly.

Now I have reached my goal and I could not
have done this without the help and guidance
of Emily at Evolution who gave me the
MOTIVATION to succeed in my path to a
healthier life. Emily and Evolution are now a
part of my life.

I started working with Emily more than three
years ago when my weight was hovering
around 400 pounds.  During that first year,
with Emily’s help, I lost 85 pounds.

I have struggled with my weight for my entire
life.  Since my initial weight loss, I have
maintained, again with Emily’s help, at my
current weight of 300 pounds for the past
two years.  I cannot overstate how big a deal
this is for me.  Over the course of my adult
life, I have gained and lost more than 1,000
pounds and this is the first time that I feel
that I have the tools to live at a healthy
weight for the rest of my life.
Emily has helped me in so many ways that it is difficult to express in words.  As it
relates to food, she has taught me the importance of eating balanced meals,
making healthy choices and of portion control.  As it relates to emotional issues
relating to food, she has  encouraged me to explore the reasons and feelings
behind my actions and, though this process is a       continuing one, this has
made all of the difference to me.

I think the most important thing that Emily has taught me is to have patience and
love for myself and to     understand that setbacks are an opportunity to learn.
Now that I have maintained my initial weight loss for two years, I am committing
to lose another 50 pounds and I am confident that I will reach this new goal.

Thank you Emily for helping me to save my own life!!!
Join us in congratulating Dan Horton on his weight loss and
marathon successes!

In January 2010, I met with Emily at
Evolution. At 44 years of age, my blood
pressure was 140/90, weight 196, and
body fat 20%. The blood pressure
concerned my doctor and me. My weight
had ballooned as my career
responsibilities grew.

I participate in long distance running
events and ran my first marathon in
1996 with a goal of "finishing in
4:00:00." My time was 4:22. From
1996-2007, I completed 14 marathons
with a goal of finishing under 4 hours. I
was beleaguered by injuries,horrible
weather, last minute mistakes, and diet
issues.

After a 3-year hiatus, I decided that 2010
was the year. I met with Emily and we
set goals. We monitored food intake,
established a meal plan, and met regularly. I ran the Boston marathon in April at
183 lbs and finished in 4 hours 18 minutes and 29 seconds.

Emily and I had to reset our plan and try again. We set our sights on Newport
Marathon in October. I ran at 182 lbs and finished in 4 hours, 0 minutes, and 8
seconds. Only 1/3 of a second per mile short of the goal! On November 21st, I
tried again in Philadelphia, this time at 181 lbs. I finished in 3:57:25.

Finally, after 14 years and 17 finishes, I finally did it! With Emily's
expertise in food management, I developed positive eating habits, had
plenty of energy for both training and racing, lost 15 lbs, lowered BP
to 119/72, reduced body fat to 17.2%, achieved a 14 year goal and even
learned to prepare meals at home. Thanks Emily!

As a banking professional, husband and
father I lead a busy, stressful life and
always put others needs in front of mine. As
I reached late forties, this lack of attention
caught up with me. I let myself get to 215lbs
and a 40 inch waist. I was feeling
uncomfortable and getting frustrated with
the idea I was going to be a fat old man.

Four months ago I started working with Kali
Garges at Evolution Pilates & Nutrition. She
set me straight on my eating choices, kept
me accountable and helped change my
body back to something I could look at
in the mirror again.
Kali helped me with new breakfast options, evening snack ideas, as well as
dinner and lunch menus. Yes, some parts were no fun, but now I actually like
vegetables! I even have my little lunch bag that I take to work each day.

Today I’m down to 180lbs and a 36 inch waist. I feel great. I have no
desire to raid the cabinets and fridge at night for junk food. I don’t
have that “I must eat now” feeling anymore. I can take the extra few
minutes to make something healthy for myself and enjoy it.

All this positive change from working with Kali has been great. She was
flexible enough to work within my food preferences and sort through the
best options for me. I’ve come to a meal structure that is sustainable
and workable for me now and in the future. The experience was far easier
and much more satisfying than I ever imagined.

On December 6th, 2009 I joined Total
Fitness.  I was overweight and out of
shape.  I weighed 273 lbs and was not
happy with my appearance.  I started to
workout and see Emily, a dietitian, at
Evolution Pilates & Nutrition.

Emily was a significant help to me, with
inspiration and encouragement I lost 40
lbs.  She is tough, but in a good way.
She would not let me give up.  We have
a mutual respect for each other and I
enjoy all the help she has given me.
She has helped teach me about healthy
food choices so I can live a healthy life.

In April 2010 I had open heart surgery
and I had lost 30 lbs prior to the surgery.
I had a better chance of a successful
outcome due to the weight loss.
This weight loss is not just another New Years resolution, but requirement to
avoid surgery in the future.  I am thankful for a second chance in life and I express
gratitude to Emily for her support.
